PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will understand what ensemble work entails. Furthermore, she/he will be able to create a band image and develop awareness of its existence and performance.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Planning and conducting music rehearsals under minimal supervision.
  • Setting-up basic sound system.
  • Performing selected repertoire.
  • Formulating press kit. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that the learner will be competent in:
  • Language and Communication at NQF level 2 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF level 2 or equivalent.
  • Aural and instrument ability at NQF level 2.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Plan and conduct music rehearsals under minimal supervision. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Roles and functions of band members are identified according to chosen song requirements specified by the provider. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Repertoire of chosen songs is discussed and agreed upon by all role players according to provider specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Song order and set list is formulated according to provider specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rehearsal times are selected and conducted under minimal supervision according to an agreed schedule as stipulated by the provider. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Songs are rehearsed according the above planning to meet provider specifications.

    Set-up basic sound system.

    PA function in relation to start-up is explained according to manufacturer's specifications.

    Correct microphone set-up is demonstrated according to industry standard.

    PA function in relation to shut-down is explained according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Perform selected repertoire.

    Form of songs/pieces is interpreted against the chosen repertoire according to genre and industry standard.

    The idiom (style) of a song/piece is presented according to genre and industry standard. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Each song/piece is introduced, linking the performance together as a whole according to industry practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Each member of ensemble is introduced and their function explained during their performance according to industry practice.

    Formulate press kit.

    A short biography of each performer is presented in hard copy according to the provider's format.

    A band image is identified, created and presented according to industry practice.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed (including RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must hold a minimum of level 4 qualification in the sub-field of music.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessment of this Unit Standard, must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
