PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The learner studying this unit standard will develop basic keyboard skills, this includes being able to use the correct technique. This will also introduce learners to the basics of elementary music.

The qualifying learner will be able to:
  • Display basic keyboard technique.
  • Demonstrate basic sight reading skills.
  • Recognise and demonstrate different styles of music in the context of the keyboard.
  • Describe and analyse different music pieces.

    The credits and level assigned to this unit standard is based on the assumption that learners have already attained the following competencies:
  • Language and Communication at NQF Level 1 or equivalent competence.
  • Mathematical literacy at NQF Level 1 or equivalent competence.

    The major scale is demonstrated according to scale exercises given. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Major triad exercises are demonstrated based on given exercises. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Correct hand fingering is demonstrated correctly according to the accepted keyboard playing technique. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All major arpeggios are demonstrated according to required specification. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Knowledge of various keyboard functions are demonstrated according to different keyboard used.

    Demonstrate basic sight reading skills.

    Note values and pitches are recognised, read and demonstrated according to music notation criteria.

    A piece of music (quick study) is interpreted, reproduced and demonstrated within a specified hour time frame, according to music rules.

    A melodic piece is read and demonstrated according to given specification.

    A musical piece is played and evaluated based on given specification.

    Appropriate music pieces are chosen, applied and demonstrated by the learner to fit a specific genre.

    Appropriate rhythm is expressed in the demonstration of the specific piece according to the genre.

    Appropriate form is adhered to according to the selected genre.

    Different genres are identified and named according to common music terminology.

  • Any individual wishing to be assessed,(including RPL) against this unit standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a memorandum of understanding with the relevant ETQA.
