PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard forms part of the qualification National Certificate: Piano Restoration NQF Level 2. This Unit Standard will serve to introduce the learner to the process of restoring and repairing the acoustic piano (Grand piano or Upright piano). It will equip the learner with a basic understanding of the assessment of the acoustic piano to determine its condition. This will provide the qualifying learner with the skills to determine the nature and extent of the repairs to restore the acoustic piano. Furthermore, the qualifying learners will have a basic knowledge of the acoustic piano components of the action and backframe.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:
  • Inspecting and removing cabinet panels of the acoustic piano.
  • Inspecting the condition of the action and the backframe.
  • Evaluating assessment report to determine repair and restoration. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 1 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 1 or equivalent.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Inspect and remove cabinet panels of the acoustic piano. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • Contexts include, but are not limited to: clients' home, workshop, church, school hall etc.
  • Acoustic pianos include: Grand piano or Upright piano. 

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The cabinet panels are inspected to establish condition in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The external panels of the acoustic piano is removed according to manufacturer's instructions. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    External panels includes, but is not limited to: top door, fall, bottom door etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The removed cabinet panels are labelled and stored as per organisational requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The acoustic piano is again inspected and the observations are recorded in accordance with organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Inspect and record the condition of the action and the backframe.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The action is removed for detailed inspection in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Action components includes, but is not limited to: hammers, dampers, keys, pedals etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The backframe is examined for any damage according to manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The condition of the action and backframe is recorded as per organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The extent of the repair and restoration is determined and recorded according to organisational procedures and requirements. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate inspection report to determine repair and restoration.

    Confirmation of the inspection report is sought in accordance with organisations processes and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The nature and extent of the repair and restoration work is recorded and reported according to organisational procedures.

    Authorisation for the repair and restoration is secured according to organisational processes and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The materials, tools and equipment for the repair and restoration is secured according to organisational procedures.
