This unit standard reflects the skills required to perform routine maintenance tasks on printing or packaging production equipment especially:
  • Ensure machines are maintained as specified.
  • Ensure required documentation is completed and stored appropriately.

    It also reflects the understanding of:
  • The basic principles underpinning the maintenance of the printing or packaging production equipment.
  • The purpose of procedures in the context of equipment maintenance.

    This unit standard would be assessed in the following printing and packaging processes eg.:

    Printing:
  • Letterpress.
  • Screen printing.
  • Flexography.
  • Gravure.
  • Lithography.
  • Continuous stationery.
  • Roll label.
  • Rotary offset.

    Manufacture of packaging, with or without in-line printing processes:
  • Bag making (flat bag).
  • Sack making (tubing).

    The skill, the knowledge and the values reflected in this unit standard form part of the exit level outcomes required for the National Certificate in Printing and Manufacture of Packaging NQF Level 3. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    The following competencies are assumed to be in place:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope and level of this unit standard is indicated by range statements related to the specific outcomes. The work reflected in this unit standard is normally performed semi-autonomously under minimal supervision. The work will be guided by relevant worksite procedures, manufacturers' specifications and safety, health and environmental legislation. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Carry out routine checks on production machines and operations. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Machinery is limited to manual, semi-automatic and automatic stand alone production process machinery.

    Routine refers to observing machinery operation during the normal operating cycle. Checks include fluid levels, wear and tear, sharpness, leaks, damage to cables, pipes and hoses, connections and fittings, tooling, safety devices and switches, rollers, cylinders, gears, belts, bearing, knives, doctor blades, anilox and ceramic rollers. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Machines are maintained as specified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Required documentation is completed and stored appropriately. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checking of equipment and equipment operations is performed at specified intervals according to company and manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Consumables are replaced according to worksite procedures and equipment specifications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Consumables include inks, lubricants, fountain chemicals, adhesives, rags, and scourers.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Work is performed safely with due care for self, fellow workers, equipment, materials and the environment. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The manner in which operations are carried out includes the control of spillages, prevention of oil and water leaks, energy efficiency, disposal of unwanted chemicals, effluent and consumables.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Explain and perform routine maintenance activities. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Routine maintenance includes topping up fluid levels, changing worn nuts, bolts, bearings, belts; greasing, oiling and lubrication.

    The key concepts related to performing routine maintenance and the basic principles which underpin it are explained in accordance with specified requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Concepts include, the value of the interchangeable machine parts; procedures and their purpose; housekeeping; safety and working with others.

    Fluid levels are topped up in accordance with specified requirements.

    Parts are changed or replaced in accordance with specifications.

    A clean and tidy workplace is maintained in accordance with specified requirements.

    Identified problems are communicated to personnel in accordance with organisational procedures.

    Appropriate personnel includes the rest of my team and supervisors, maintenance team and safety officials.
