PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to assess and verify by approval, the appropriate packaging required for the transportation of Dangerous Goods. They are able to identify the goods, package the goods and identify any special requirements. Learners will also be able to obtain approval from correct sources and authority.

A person credited with this unit standard is capable of:
  • Identifying and classifying dangerous goods to be packed.
  • Assessing packaging group of dangerous goods to be packed.
  • Assessing and identifying packaging requirements.
  • Obtaining approval of packaging by competent/testing authority. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in:
  • Communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    Compatibility of dangerous goods and substance with packaging are identified, described and explained according to South African National Standards code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The identification and classification for packaging groups are explained and described according to South African National Standards code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The types of packaging of dangerous goods are identified, explained and described according to South African National Standards code of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The content of the relevant South African National Standards codes of practice are identified, explained and described as it relates to the packaging of dangerous goods.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Assess packaging group of dangerous goods to be packed.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Packaging groups are assessed based on the risk of the dangerous goods to be packed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The differences between normal packaged goods and intermediate bulk containers are explained and described according to the South African National Standards codes of practice. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The marking and labelling of packaging and intermediate bulk containers are explained and described as they relate to the South African National Standards code of practice. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Obtain approval of packaging by competent/testing authority. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    A testing authority is identified to test the packaging of the dangerous goods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The registration number of the testing authority is obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Confirmation marking is verified on packaging as per guidelines and regulations.
