A person accredited with this unit standard is able to understand the composition and working of the voice, and to use the voice as an efficient instrument of communication and performance.

Learners accredited with this Unit Standard will be capable of:

  • Developing the use of sound in voice production.
  • Applying articulation and resonance in voice production.
  • Applying vocal interpretation and improvisation in specified contexts.
  • Knowing the theory of voice production.

    Demonstrate knowledge of the theory of voice production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The concepts and principles of voice production are identified and explained in context using illustrations. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The knowledge of the key organs and anatomical structures used in voice production is demonstrated with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The functions of the above in voice production are explained and discussed in context. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Apply the use of breath in voice production.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The appropriate use of the apparatus and mechanisms of breathing is demonstrated with an illustration.

    Sustained breath capacity and control is demonstrated during voice production.

    Relaxation techniques, muscle support, and body alignment are demonstrated.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Specific problems associated with the sound in voice are identified and described with an illustration. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Specific problems relate to a weak voice, a high-pitched voice, a voice that sounds nasal, and a voice that is gruff.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The connection between breath and sound is demonstrated with an illustration. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Checklists on the control in the release of sound are prepared and maintained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The connection between sound and emotional release is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The principles and skills of projection of sound in voice production are applied.

    The importance of warming up the voice is explained with examples to produce proper voice for performance and communication.

    Appropriate vocal skills for specified verbal presentations are selected and demonstrated.

    An accurate understanding of the value of words and imagery is displayed.

    The ability to express accurately the meaning and emotion of a given speech is demonstrated. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Listening skills and text analysis are used to apply vocal interpretation to a given text. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    An ability to free the voice to explore its sound range and energy levels, and to discover and display emotional ranges is demonstrated.

  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
  • Internal and external moderation should encompass achievement of competence described in this Unit Standard as well as the integrated competence described in the Exit Level Outcome of the Qualification.
