PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners who apply temperature calibration measurements. These measurements are used within the field of forensic science in a supporting function. Only once instruments are calibrated can they effectively be used to make certain findings. This unit standard will enable a learner to perform elementary assessments of calibration measurements. The measurement of temperature in this unit standard is not conducted on an elementary level but should be understood as a more complex measurement in terms of equipment, accuracy and selection of appropriate methods of measurement.

A learner credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the concept temperature.
  • Measure temperature using laboratory reference thermometers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The laws of thermodynamics are described in line with their applications. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Laws refer to the first, second and third laws of thermodynamics.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of thermometers is explained in terms of their operating principles. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Measure temperature using laboratory reference thermometers.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The traceability of a reference thermometer is verified in accordance with national equivalence. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    National equivalence refers to a national standard that is traceable to the international standard.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The condition of thermometers is evaluated in order to assess if it is fit for purpose. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A measurement method that satisfies the required temperature range and accuracy is selected for use. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Measurement is set up according to the selected method. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The number of measurements that must be performed is identified in order to satisfy precision requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Temperatures are measured according to a given case study. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    Results of the temperature measurement are interpreted in order to issue certificates. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Results must include appropriate resolution and uncertainty of measurement according to current quality guidelines, and must also be rounded-off and expressed in unit and decimal notation.
