PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for learners in the field of forensic science who use elementary statistical concepts. Statistical calculations and formulae are used within the forensic science field to determine and support findings. This unit standard will enable a learner to use elementary concepts in the contextualised field of forensic science as a means to an end when determining certain findings.

A person accredited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Explain the use of statistical variables.
  • Use elementary statistical methods.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    When reference is made to statistical concepts in this unit standard it must include, but is not limited to: proportion, percentage, mean, median, mode, percentiles, range, variance and standard deviation.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of statistical variables are explained according to their uses. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Types of variables must include, but are not limited to: ordinal, nominal, interval, and ratio.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Quantitative and qualitative datasets are distinguished with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Descriptive statistics are defined using examples. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Examples should include, but are not limited to: mean, median, mode, range, variance, standard deviation, standard error, confidence intervals, parametric and non-parametric statistics.

    Demonstrate the use of elementary statistical methods.

    Elementary methods refer to frequency distribution statistical methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Datasets are analysed in order to select a statistical method. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Datasets must include both quantitative and qualitative datasets.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Calculations are performed in order to assess the distribution of datasets. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Calculations must include, but are not limited to: Shapiro-Wilks, and Bartlett tests.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Graphical methods are used to represent datasets. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Methods include, but are not limited to: bar charts/histograms, pie charts, scatter diagrams, box and whisker plots.
     


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any individual who wishes to be assessed against this unit standard (including assessment of RPL) may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA, or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA. Assessors must be competent in the outcome of the Unit Standard.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard or assessing this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.

    Glossary of terminology:
  • Bartlett test: Parametric test that describes the similarity of the distribution of the data around a central point (mean) between two or more groups.
  • Confidence interval: Defines a range within which the true mean value for the entire population will fall based on a sample that was drawn from the population.
  • Interval: Two defined cut-off points between which a value could possibly fall.
  • Mean: Central tendency statistic which consists of the average value of a set of normally distributed data points.
  • Median: Central tendency statistic which consists of the value within a set of data points beneath which 50% of the other values fall.
  • Mode: Central tendency statistic which consists of the value that occurs most frequently in a set of data points.
  • Nominal variable: A variable which consists of different categories which cannot be ranked.
  • Non-parametric: No assumption is made about the distribution of a dataset.
  • Ordinal variable: A variable which consists of different categories which can be ranked i.e. one category can be "greater than" or "less than" another category.
  • Parametric: Assumes that the distribution of a dataset follows a specific distribution model, generally, a normal or Gaussian distribution.
  • Range: The difference between two defined cut-off points of an interval.
  • Ratio: A mathematical measure of the linear relationship between two values by dividing one value by another e.g. ratio of x to y = x / y.
  • Shapiro-Wilks Test: A statistical test for determining if a dataset is normally distributed.
  • Standard deviation: Parametric measure of the dispersion of data points around the mean.
  • Standard error: Parametric measure of how close a sample mean is to the true population mean.
  • Variance: Similar to standard deviation as it is a measure of the dispersion of values around the mean.
