PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is aimed at individuals who are required to design programmes in their area of responsibility. Credit learners achieve employability as they are empowered to function at a higher level of responsibility in terms of programme design. Programme design competence can also be transferred to other areas, fields and contexts.
Programmes are essential to collect information regarding the scope of radiological hazards in the workplace and the effectiveness of controls through which these hazards are minimised, thus reducing the harmful effects of radiation on the workforce. Also, effective programmes relate to specific radiological hazards - which programmes are needed for which contexts - ensuring context-specific and optimised radiation protection programmes. Credited learners are capable of: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
Learners must demonstrate competence within given control boundaries. Radiation protection programmes can include designation of areas, local rules and supervision, effective surveillance, etc. Other range statements are provided in the unit standard where relevant to specific outcomes and/or assessment criteria. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Evaluate environments and processes based on operational experience. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Environment includes public environment, occupational environment (e.g. heat stress areas), waste streams, etc. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Operating environments and processes are evaluated against relevant given standards for specific environments and processes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
Existing and previous operational experience is analysed based on verified data. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Evaluation of the operating environments is conducted and justified in terms of analysis of operational experience. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
All accessible operational experience is taken into account. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |

Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO): |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING |
Identify and solve problems where responses to problems show that such critical and creative thinking has been used to make responsible decisions to allocate adequate resources to specific surveillance and monitoring programmes, resources allocated meet requirements to complete programme activities within given parameters, symptoms of problems are identified and root causes determined, and problems are rectified within set time frames. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING |
Work effectively with others as a member of a team, group, organisation or community when relevant persons are notified about identified problems in terms that allow resolution. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO ORGANISING |
Organise and manage oneself and one's activities responsibly and effectively when procedures are developed in approved formats and legal and organisational requirements are adhered to, resource gaps are addressed according to organisation-specific requirements, and implementation monitoring is reported in accordance with established procedures, and within agreed time frame and format. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING |
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information when analysis of existing and previous operational experience is based on verified data, available surveillance standards are identified accurately for specific contexts, relevant aspects from standards are identified for context-specific programmes and programme implementation is monitored and recorded against plans. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO COMMUNICATING |
Communicate effectively using visual, mathematic and/or language skills in the modes of oral and/or written presentation to disseminate programme requirements to all responsible persons, report priorities and requirements are documented, and implementation monitoring is documented and reported in accordance with established procedures, and within agreed format. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO SCIENCE |
Use science and technology effectively and critically, showing responsibility towards the environment and health of others when workflow is organised to achieve minimal waste and delay. |
UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING |
Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that problem-solving contexts do not exist in isolation when environments and processes are evaluated against relevant given standards for specific environments and processes, procedures are developed that meet specific surveillance standards and their requirements, resources required, and resources available are accurately identified for specific programmes. |

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD: |
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here. |
