PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

This Unit Standard is intended for Managers, people at workplaces who are exposed to occupational health and occupational hygiene risks. It will be useful for Safety Officers, Safety Representatives, Occupational Health and Safety Personnel, Occupational Hygienists, Underwriters, Insurance Assessors and Risk Managers who are responsible in part or in full for the management of occupational health and occupational hygiene and who should be conversant with the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its regulations, as amended, and the consequences of non-compliance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of legislation regulating occupational health and occupational hygiene in a selected industry.

Describing the nature of occupational hygiene stressors in a specific workplace.

Applying the risk management process to the management of occupational health and occupational hygiene risk in a specific workplace.

Designing an occupational health and occupational hygiene programme for a specific organisation.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE

The typical scope of this Unit Standard is

Hygiene stressors include, but are not limited to physical, chemical, biological, ergonomic and radiation related risks.

Physical stressors include heat, cold, noise, lighting, vibration and air quality.

Chemical stressors include flammables, toxics, explosives and corrosives.

Biological stressors include viruses, bacteria, allergens parasites and toxins.

Ergonomic stressors include workplace design, man job specifications and biokinetics.

Radiation stressors include ionizing, non-ionizing and electromagnetic forces.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of legislation regulating occupational health and occupational hygiene in a selected industry.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

Hygiene stressors in a specific workplace are named and an indication is given of the kind of impact each could have on an employee's well being.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

Occupation exposure limits are explained with reference to noise, hazardous chemical substances and radiation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

The principles of control measures applicable to different stressors are explained with examples.

Apply the risk management process to the management of occupational health and occupational hygiene risk in a specific workplace.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

The stressors in a specific work environment are identified relative to the workplace operational processes.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

The risk exposure is evaluated and quantified for each identified stressor and control measures are proposed to reduce or eliminate the risk to within legal limits and requirements.

Design an occupational health and occupational hygiene programme for a specific organisation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1

An occupational hygiene programme is designed to address the hygiene problems identified at a specific site.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2

A medical surveillance programme is developed to monitor the effectiveness of the occupational hygiene controls of a specific organisation.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3

An occupational health programme is designed to meet the legal requirements of the specific industry or workplace.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4

The records required for the occupational hygiene programme, medical surveillance and occupational health plan are designed for a specific workplace and an indication is given of how long it is necessary to retain the different records.

ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5

An outline of a training programme for employees is developed that complies with occupational health and occupational hygiene requirements.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing a candidate against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA or ETQA where a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) exists with the relevant ETQA.

Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines and the agreed ETQA procedures.
