PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who manage asset risk in insurance and other organisations. It will be useful for Risk Managers, Underwriters and learners who specialise in Transportation insurance.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating knowledge and understanding the basic principles of the Act and accompanying regulations.
  • Describing how explosives are classified.
  • Identifying the risk associated with specific explosives.
  • Applying knowledge of the Explosives Act to manage risk at a specific site. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is the Explosives Act, 26, of 1956 and the accompanying Regulations.

    Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of the Act and accompanying regulations.

    The concept of an explosive is explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The basic principles of the Act are explained and the regulations are interpreted with reference to manufacturing, handling, storage and transportation of explosives. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The liability of persons who manufacture, handle, store and transport explosives is explained and an indication is given of the consequences of non-compliance. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Describe how explosives are classified.

    The classes of explosives are explained and an indication is given of the requirements associated with each in terms of manufacturing, handling, storage and transportation of explosives.

    Explosive substances are categorised according to safety distances.

    Identify the risk associated with specific explosives.

    The risks involved in manufacturing, handling, storing, using and transporting explosives are explained for a variety of selected explosives.
