PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of identifying the various types of advanced hydraulic systems, components and parts, to test diagnose and repair system faults and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
This unit standard covers the diagnosis and repair of advanced hydraulic systems, hydraulic and power assisted steering systems.

The ranges as indicated under the specific outcomes determine the scope and level of this unit standard.

All work is performed without supervision in accordance with operational, repair manual specifications and procedures and in compliance with occupational safety, health and environmental legislation.

  • Job instructions include obtaining technical data, the identification and selection of tools and equipment and to identify the type of hydraulic steering system.
  • Technical data includes the parts and repair manuals.

    Reasons why specific test equipment is used are given in terms of the required result and availability of equipment. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Test and diagnose the system faults. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • System faults include slow implement speed, erratic operation, lack of power and non-functional condition.
  • Diagnosis includes the analysing and interpretation of the test results.
  • System tests include pressure testing and reaction speed testing, and electric and electronic tests.

    This range covers advanced hydraulic systems.

    System components are identified and their functions explained in relation to the system.

    Work is conducted in accordance with flat rate time schedules. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Repair the system. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
  • System includes implement hydraulic, loadsensing, pressure compensating, proportional power control and electric/electronic controlled, power assisted steering.
  • Components includes hydraulic cylinders, valves, solenoids, pumps (gear vane and piston) and electronic control units.
  • Repair includes the removal and/or replacement of components and/or parts, performing adjustments and replenish oils.

    The system is repaired in accordance with the repair manual and safety procedures.

    Consequences of not repairing identified faults are explained in terms of the impact on the engine performance.

    The system is tested and the results recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.

    The results are interpreted and the system repair is confirmed in accordance with quality and operational procedures.

    Reasons for confirming a repair are explained in terms of the Quality Management System.
