PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
People in the field of manufacturing and engineering require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. The learning outcomes in this unit standard also contribute to the exit level outcomes required for various manufacturing and engineering qualifications. The learner is capable of diagnosing and repairing engine and exhaust braking systems and to record and submit a report. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

    Faults identified are recorded in accordance with workplace and quality procedures.

    Reasons for preparing the vehicle are explained in terms of the type of work and productivity.

    Diagnose and repair system faults.

  • Faults include inefficient brake performance of the system and faulty components.
  • Repair includes the removal and/or replacement of components and/or parts and performing adjustments.
  • Component and parts includes cylinder head valves, exhaust brake valve, air pressure regulator valves, oil pressure regulating valves, solenoids and hydraulic actuators.
