PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be capable of providing support to equipment manufacturers and the engineering department during Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment installations.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Understanding Communication, Navigation and Surveillance installation project management.
  • Understanding the principles of In-Factory and On-Site acceptance tests on new installations.
  • Assisting with installation of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment.
  • Understanding the principles of analysing and measuring Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment performance during the warrantee period.
  • Understanding the principles of analysing and monitoring the Logistic support program. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that a learner will be competent in:
  • Communication at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF level 4 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Range of Installation Projects covering CNS (Communication, Navigation, Surveillance) systems include but are not limited to:
  • Voice control, Radio and Telephone systems, VOR, DME, NDB, ILS systems, Primary and secondary radar systems, Radar Display and processing systems and CNS networking infrastructures.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Understand Communication, Navigation and Surveillance installation project management. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The individual functions and responsibilities within the installation project is determined according to the Statement of Work. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Personal and team members' tasks are established according to the Work Breakdown Structure. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The project scheduling and progress is explained using PERT, CPM and Gantt Charts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The management of project budgets, resource and cost control is explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Statuary regulations in the performance of all installation work required under the project is explained with references. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Regulations include, but are not limited to: OHAS, Airport Regulations.
  • Civil Aviation regulations and ICAO recommendations and practices.

    Understand In-Factory and On-Site acceptance tests on new installations.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the principles of User Requirement Specifications is demonstrated within a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An understanding of the principles of inspection and verification of equipment against the technical components of the User Requirement Specifications and equipment Manufacturer's requirements is demonstrated within a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An understanding of the principles of technical test procedures to verify the performance of hardware and software, according to manufacturer's instructions, is demonstrated within a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An understanding of the principles of audit and verification of all installation work carried out by the supplier and manufacturer of the equipment, in accordance with organisational procedures, is demonstrated within a structured scenario. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Assisting with installation of Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    An understanding of the principles of installation activities is demonstrated according to organisational operational requirements. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Activities includes, but are not limited to:
  • Lay, terminate and label cables.
  • Install components.
  • Equipment and/or systems.
  • Connect and set up equipment to manufacturer's specifications.
  • Install lightning protection modules.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An understanding of the principles of systems configuration is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An understanding of the principles of testing of components, equipment and/or systems is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    An understanding of the principles of final acceptance tests and verification of system functionality is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Understand the principles of analysing and measuring Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment performance during the warrantee period. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Failures and non-conformances are recorded according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Fault histories are extracted from the management system according to organisational procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The records and fault histories are used to evaluate equipment performance in accordance with manufacturer's specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Technical reports on the reliability, availability and maintainability of the Communication. Navigation and Surveillance equipment are compiled according to the organisational procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Understanding the principles of analysing and monitoring the Logistic support program. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Maintenance records, job cards and fault reports are completed as per Communication, Navigation and Surveillance equipment support service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    An understanding of the principles of the monitoring of the logistic support system, during the warrantee period, is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    An understanding of the evaluation of the logistic support system, during the warrantee period, is demonstrated in a structured scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Recommendations resulting from logistic support system evaluation is provided in accordance with organisational procedures. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
  • The accredited Training Provider will oversee internal moderation of assessment.
