PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The qualifying learner will be capable of maintaining ground based Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment used for aeronautical communication, navigation and surveillance purposes. This unit standard forms part of the Core learning within the specialised area of Communications, Navigation and Surveillance technical support in an air traffic control environment. It will serve to professionalise the community of Air Traffic Management Engineering Technicians who will be able to work productively to enhance the safety and efficiency of the air traffic management.

Qualifying learners will be capable of:
  • Performing corrective maintenance to support equipment.
  • Performing routine preventive maintenance to support equipment.
  • Analysing and measuring equipment performance.
  • Carrying out maintenance support.

    Perform corrective maintenance to support equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment failure is verified through contact with customers and monitoring systems according to Organisational Standing Instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Corrective fault diagnosis and faulty modules or components are identified using Test and built in test equipment as per equipment manual instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faulty modules or components are replaced in accordance with appropriate corrective maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Corrective equipment adjustments are made in accordance with Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment corrective maintenance procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Test equipment is repaired when faulty and calibrated in accordance with Quality Management System procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    The functionality of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment is confirmed, according to equipment manual requirements and communicated to all role players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 7 
    The fault finding logic processes employed and the choice of tools and test equipment used, are explained with examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 8 
    An understanding of Support Contracts in place, access to contact contractors and the management of contractors is shown using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 9 
    Reports are generated and logs maintained of the corrective maintenance of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment according to Organisational practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Preventive maintenance is carried out in accordance with routine maintenance schedules and instructions for Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The functionality of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment is confirmed, according to equipment manual requirements and communicated to all role players. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Test equipment is routinely calibrated in accordance with Quality Management Systems procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The implications of failing to carry out preventive maintenance are explained using examples. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Reports are generated and logs maintained of the status and functionality of the Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment according to the organisational maintenance procedures.

    Analyse and measure equipment performance.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The performance of Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment is measured using test equipment as specified in manufacturers Specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Equipment performance measurements are carried out in accordance with technical manual procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Performance figures are evaluated against manufacturers' specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Remedial maintenance is performed as per structured scenarios when deviation from manufacturer specifications are established. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Technical reports are compiled and the status and performance of equipment is accurately recorded according to organisational procedures.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Stores work is carried out in accordance with ground based Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment support service procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Spares, tools and material are drawn from stores in accordance with stores procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Faulty equipment and modules are returned to stores in accordance with stores procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    All maintenance records, job cards and fault reports are completed in accordance with Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment support service requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Where applicable Maintenance Management System is updated with all logistics data in accordance with Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment support service procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Housekeeping activities are performed at all Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Support Equipment sites in accordance with procedures.

  • UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard and the related Exit Level Outcomes of the Qualification must be accredited by the relevant ETQA.
  • External Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.

    Identify and solve problems when carrying out fault diagnosis thereby ensuring that appropriate remedial actions are initiated for the effective restoration of failed or defective CNS Support Equipment.

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING 
    Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems by recognising that the role of the technician is a vital part of the integrated CNS Support Equipment which have an impact on Air Traffic Control, Airline Pilots and the flying community at large and as such should therefore not be regarded as a role which can be performed in isolation of this network.

  • Assessors must be registered as assessors with a relevant ETQA or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Assessors must be in possession of a relevant qualification at a minimum of NQF level 6.

    Supplementary Information

    Routine maintenance schedules have been prepared and are in place for all equipment based on manufacturers' recommendations, operational requirements and support requirements determined from actual experience during the operational life of the equipment.

    International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) publishes recommendations and standards for all communications, navigational and surveillance systems used in aviation. The ICAO Annexes publication includes the recommendations and standards pertaining to CNS Support equipment.

    Corrective Maintenance Procedures

    Corrective maintenance procedures include procedures contained in equipment manufacturer manuals and site-specific maintenance procedures.
