PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The unit standard will provide persons with a basis of theoretical knowledge of the general development of warfare from antiquity to the contemporary era. Knowledge of military history will enable persons to develop sharpened judgement, improved perception and a broadened perspective in terms of the problems of national defence. This unit standard will create an understanding of the development of war and warfare globally since the rise of the earliest civilisation and its evolution up to the current world situation. The focus is on the impact of technology and organisational development in military organisations. This unit standard also explains the impact of social, political and economic developments on military organisations and the conduct of war.

    The formation of the South African National Defence Force in 1994 is explained with reference to the changing political environment. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Deployment of the SANDF in peace support operations since 1994 is explained in terms of its mandate.
