In all of the tables in this document, both the pre-2009 NQF Level and the NQF Level is shown. In the text (purpose statements, qualification rules, etc), any references to NQF Levels are to the pre-2009 levels unless specifically stated otherwise.

This unit standard does not replace any other unit standard and is not replaced by any other unit standard.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable learners to apply coatings to roof cladding, timber structures and apply painted waterproofing, in line with safety legislation, and National Building Regulations and requirements, and based on specification drawings. The role of safety is crucial, and learners apply competence under supervision of a team leader. The implications of design modifications and industry convention to deal with practical challenges are important factors when attaining the outcomes of this unit standard.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

UNIT STANDARD RANGE
1. Special surface coatings include plastic surface coatings, floor coatings, texture coating systems, waterproofing coatings, and thermal/plaster cladding systems.
2. Components of special surface coating systems include pigments, extenders, fillers, binders, thinners, additives, and catalysts, including durability, application and film attribute.
3. Properties of special surface coatings include opacity, consistency, flow, adhesion, elasticity, drying time, gloss, spreading rate, durability and can stability.
4. New and previously coated special surfaces are prepared.
5. Interior and exterior waterproofing are included.
6. Methods of drying special surface coatings include oxidation, evaporation, and polymerisation.
7. Potential coating problems include non-drying, adhesion, surface disintegration, and can stability defects, including skinning, fattening, livering, settling, flocculation and gelling.
8. Floor coatings include coatings for interior and exterior floors.
9. Texture coating systems include decorative, acoustic and pyrocoustic texture coating systems.
10. Thermal/plaster cladding systems include flashing systems, foam claddings, reinforcement, modified plasters and finishing systems.
11. Special surface coating systems include primers, sealers, undercoats, and finishing coats.
12. Component failure effects include bleeding, cracking, crazing, chalking, discoloration, loss of gloss, retarded drying, floating, yellowing, mould, mildew, and blistering.
13. Substrate failure effects include bleeding, saponification, efflorescence, cissing, sinkage, flashing, flaking, rust spotting, bleaching, mould, mildew adhesion, and blistering.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the National Certificate for Timber Roof Erecting. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard. Those assessing the outcomes of this unit standard should be qualified assessors, registered with CETA for assessment of the qualification.

UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
Qualifying learners understand and can explain:
1. Properties of special surface coatings
2. Methods of drying special surface coatings
3. Atmospheric influences which affect drying conditions, including temperature, humidity and pollutants
4. Substrate influences which affect drying conditions, including temperature, composition and reactivity
5. Reasons for using waterproofing
6. Hydrostatic pressure
7. Thermal/plaster cladding types, installation methods and application procedures

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
