PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners working towards this unit standard will be doing so with the intention of reaching the full qualification "National Certificate (Construction) for the installation of floor coverings". Learners will be involved in, or working within a floor covering installation environment.

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be to apply basic carpentry skills with confidence, including -
  • Measuring up and determining quantities of materials
  • Identifying the requirements for protection of all stages of carpentry including good housekeeping? Using carpentry tools as necessary in preparation for floor covering installation
  • Critiquing and assessing completed carpentry work.

    This competence lays the foundation for the development of further floor covering competencies and underpins competencies to be acquired as part of a learning progression pathway. The generic competencies as outlined in this unit standard should facilitate portability of floor covering installation skills across different contexts within the construction industry.

    It contributes to the development of a professional community of floor covering practitioners who understand the challenges and opportunities of the South African construction context. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard applies to persons who perform floor covering installations by erecting basic wooden constructions:
  • Basic building drawings
  • Assistance of a general worker will be restricted to the physical handling of the material and equipment only on instruction of the candidate
  • A safe working environment must at all times be maintained by the candidate in compliance with legislation.

    1. Characteristics, properties and purpose of the different materials used in the carpentry trade is identified and explained.

    Identify the requirements for protection of all stages of carpentry including good housekeeping.

    1. Stacking, storing and positioning of materials, mixtures, ingredients and equipment is explained and pointed out. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The latest ISO and National Building Regulations applicable to carpentry in preparation for floor covering installation published in the Government Gazette is described and applied. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Use carpentry tools as necessary in preparation for floor covering installation.

  • Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the CETA - ETQA, for "National Certificate (Construction) for the installation of floor coverings"
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.
  • CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

  • Use, operate and maintain hand and power tools, machines and equipment in accordance with safe-handling procedures so that accidents and injury to yourself and others can be prevented.
  • Power tools - check all leads and power tool cables are in good repair to prevent accident, injury or electrocution whilst working with these tools.
