PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

Learners who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to set out, brace and erect site made, as well as prefabricated roof trusses in accordance with roof plan drawing specifications, National Building Regulations, safety legislation and within prescribed timeframes.

This competence complements the other carpentry competencies and contributes to the development of a professional community of Carpentry practitioners, who are able to use Science and Technology responsibly and cost-effectively. It should result in improved quality and service delivery in Carpentry. The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved.

The typical scope of this unit standard is:

The learner is required to demonstrate competence in erecting the following types of roof trusses: howe truss, L-shaped roof truss, gable roof truss, hip truss, hip rafter, valley rafter, valley jack, nail plate roof truss.

Scaffolding includes a ladder and trestle.

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS

Anyone assessing a learner or moderating the assessment of a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor/moderator with the CETA - ETQA, for "the National Certificate in Construction Carpentry".

Any institution offering learning that will enable the achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider with the CETA - ETQA.

CETA - ETQA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this qualification.

Organise and manage themselves and their activities responsibly and effectively.

Maintain tools and equipment in good working order to ensure that the erection of roof trusses is carried out effectively and the cost to company for the frequent replacement of tools and equipment is minimised.

Maintain a neat, clean and tidy work area.

Plan work so that roof trusses are erected within the specified deadlines.

Read the roof plan drawing carefully and thoroughly in order to interpret correctly the specified requirements for setting out and erecting the roof trusses.

Confirm your understanding of all requirements specified for the erection of roof trusses with the client/architect before commencing with the work at hand so as to minimise future delays that might be caused because this work has to be redone.

Communicate in a clear and audible manner when issuing instructions to team members so that all verbal instructions are clearly understood and can be carried out as required.

Use levelling devices to ensure that wall plates and roof trusses are aligned and levelled.

Determine the micron thickness of under-tile membrane.

Check the safety and security of scaffolding at the beginning of each new work day to minimise accident or injury to yourself and other team members.

Demonstrate an understanding of the world as a set of related systems.

Ensure that materials, tools and equipment used to erect roof trusses is safely and securely stored and protected on the building site to minimise the risk of theft, accident or injury to site personnel or visitors to the building site.

The accurate interpretation of architect/client`s concept and the completion of work within specified time frames results in ongoing business opportunities for the organisation.
