PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable construction painters to prepare all types of new surfaces for painting. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
FETC NQF Level 2 literacy and numeracy competencies; Unit Standards 1 through 8. 

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Surfaces include new, absorbent and non-absorbent, rough and smooth, and poor or damaged surfaces.
  • Bare metal areas are spot primed with appropriate primer.
  • Bare areas on PVC surfaces being repainted is sanded down with water sandpaper.
  • Floors are etch primed, and PVC surfaces being repainted are primed with etching primer.

    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998 b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Construction painters. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard.
