PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The purpose of this unit standard is to enable construction painters to apply special surfaces.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Special surface coatings include plastic surface coatings, floor coatings, texture coating systems, waterproofing coatings, and thermal/plaster cladding systems.
  • Components of special surface coating systems include pigments, extenders, fillers, binders, thinners, additives, and catalysts, including durability, application and film attribute.
  • Properties of special surface coatings include opacity, consistency, flow, adhesion, elasticity, drying time, gloss, spreading rate, durability and can stability.
  • New and previously coated special surfaces are prepared.
  • Interior and exterior waterproofing are included.
  • Methods of drying special surface coatings include oxidation, evaporation, and polymerisation.
  • Potential coating problems include non-drying, adhesion, surface disintegration, and can stability defects, including skinning, fattening, livering, settling, flocculation and gelling.
  • Floor coatings include coatings for interior and exterior floors.
  • Texture coating systems include decorative, acoustic and pyrocoustic texture coating systems.
  • Thermal/plaster cladding systems include flashing systems, foam claddings, reinforcement, modified plasters and finishing systems.
  • Special surface coating systems include primers, sealers, undercoats, and finishing coats.
  • Component failure effects include bleeding, cracking, crazing, chalking, discoloration, loss of gloss, retarded drying, floating, yellowing, mould, mildew, and blistering.
  • Substrate failure effects include bleeding, saponification, efflorescence, cissing, sinkage, flashing, flaking, rust spotting, bleaching, mould, mildew adhesion, and blistering.

    Accreditation and Moderation:

    Assessment of learner achievements takes place at providers accredited by CETA (RSA, 1998 b) for the provision of programs that result in the outcomes specified for the Certificate for Contstuction Painters. CETA is responsible for moderation of learner achievements of learners who meet the requirements of this unit standard.
