PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the production and understanding of working piping drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Demonstrating an understanding of piping draughting
  • Identifying and drawing schematic drawings
  • Identifying, describing and drawing isometric layouts and flow diagrams

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.
  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in computer technology at Level 3 on the NQF or equivalent.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
  • Piping components will include reducers, tee`s cap`s, couplings, plugs, swages, unions, elbows, flanges, valves, pumps and vessels.
  • Flow diagrams of systems will include process flow diagrams, mechanical flow diagrams, utility flow diagrams, mark numbers, flow arrow and line size dimensioning.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Demonstrate an understanding of piping draughting

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Terminology as applicable to piping draughting is explained and its uses described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. The history of conveying fluids, materials of construction, size, types of manufacturing of pipes and connections are explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
    Identify and draw schematic drawings

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. Piping components are identified and described in accordance with accepted definitions.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Piping components are drawn and placed correctly in a drawing

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. A schematic view of piping layouts are drawn according to scale

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. An isometric drawing is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Identify, describe and draw isometric layouts and flow diagrams

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
    1. An ISO layout of piping installations is drawn within agreed timeframes.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
    2. Process, mechanical and utility flow diagrams are described and drawn.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
    3. Mark numbers, flow arrows, line size and dimensions are inserted into the drawing.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4
    4. Flow sheet symbols and diagrams are drawn for instrumentation within agreed time frames

UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS
The relevant Education, Training, Quality Assurance Body (ETQA) will accredit providers offering learning towards this standard, and register assessors.

    UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE
  • A broad understanding of the function of piping draughting in the engineering industry.
  • A general understanding of the history of conveying fluids.
  • A comprehensive understanding of symbols of fitting for layouts in piping drawings.
  • A broad understanding of the methods and techniques for creating schematic drawings, isometric layouts and flow diagrams.
  • A general understanding of instrumentation drawing.

  • Critical Cross-field Outcomes (CCFO):

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO IDENTIFYING
Identify and solve problems pertaining to piping draughting, schematic drawings, isometric layouts and flow diagrams

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO WORKING
Work effectively with others as a member of a piping draughting team

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO COLLECTING
Collect, analyse, organise and critically evaluate information pertaining to piping draughting

    UNIT STANDARD CCFO DEMONSTRATING
Understand the world as a set of related systems by recognising that correct piping draughting improves productivity on a piping project

    UNIT STANDARD NOTES

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
