PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard provides a broad introduction to the producing of electrical working drawings. It is the starting point for a learner in this sector. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes in relation to the learner`s own context and experience of the world of work.


The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Describing and explaining the purpose of electrical draughting and the principles of electricity.
  • Identifying, defining and drawing electrical / electronic graphic symbols and diagrams.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the generation and distribution of electricity.
  • Describing and drawing the control and protection of electric motors
  • Demonstrating an understanding of the wiring of premises.
  • Demonstrating an understanding of interior and exterior lighting design.

  • Learners accessing this unit standard will have demonstrated competence in mathematics, engineering science and technical drawing at NQF level 4 or equivalent.

  • Basic concepts of electricity will include current flow, voltage, resistance and resistivity, factors that determines resistance, types of electrical supplies (AC and DC), inductance and capacitance.
  • Electro magnetism will include: characteristics of a magnetic field, magnetic field around a current carrying conductor, solenoid and relay, core, turns and polarity.
  • Measuring instruments will include voltmeter, ammeter, ohm-meter, wattmeter and kilowatt-hour meter.
  • Electrical units and symbols will include: resistance (ohm - W); voltage (volt - V); current (ampere - A); inductance (henry - H); capacitance (farad - F); power (watt - W); time (seconds - s; hours - h); energy (joule - J; kilowatt-hours - kWh); frequency (hertz - Hz); magnetic flux density (tesla - T); illuminance (lux - lx); flux (lumen - lm). Greek alphabet: (alpha, beta, theta, mu, pi, rho, sigma, phi, omega).
  • Qualifying symbols will include direct current, alternating current of 50Hz, positive polarity, and negative polarity.
  • Electrical components will include resistor, variable resistor, potentiometer heating element and capacitor.
  • Electronic components (semiconductors) will include: diode, light emitting diode, tunnel diode, zener diode, diac, triode thyristor, transistor PNP, transistor NPN, light dependant resistor, photodiode, photovoltaic cell.
  • AC power generation will include the following types: Hydro electrical, coal and nuclear. DC power generation will include the following types DC generators, rectified AC and chemical (batteries). Power transmission / distribution will include the following: Overhead power lines, cables, substations, transformers, rectifiers, switchgear, protection devices and kiosks in a ring feed system.
  • DC motors will include shunt and series motors. AC motors will include squirrel cage and slip ring motors.
  • Single and three phase motor control (starting, speed control, stopping, and change of direction and protection) will include Mechanical switches, contactors, circuit breakers, star-delta, forward reverse and capacitor start. Motor protection will include thermal, overcurrent and undervoltage protection
  • Electric light and power layouts will include lighting with normal, two-way, intermediate and automatic (photo electric control unit) switching, switched and welding socket outlets, comfort heating / air-conditioning, water heating, stove and oven points, worship equipment, distribution boards and cabling.
  • Distribution board circuit diagrams will include incoming cabling and protective devices, busbars, phase indication, load balancing, sub circuit protection and indication, earth leakage protection, water heating control circuitry (industrial installations), current ratings and cable sizes
  • Lighting designs will consider minimum specified illumination levels, glare levels, environmental factors such as reflective properties of floors, walls and ceilings, office / industrial /domestic application as well as pollution levels and hazardous environments.
  • Types of lamps will include incandescent, fluorescent, mercury, sodium and metal halide
  • Luminaires will include commercial, industrial, diffused, anti-corrosive and protected types.
  • Exterior lighting will include security (perimeter), street, medium and high mast lighting.
