PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is intended for personnel employed or who wish to follow a career in any business environment. The focus is knowledge, skills, values and attitudes required to process information using a database in a business environment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and accessing a database.
  • Processing and checking numerical data and text for input into the database.
  • Saving and storing information accurately using a computer keyboard and a range of familiar procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    There is open access to this unit standard. Learners should:
  • Hold a GETC or equivalent qualification
  • Be competent in communication and mathematical literacy NQF level 1 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The typical scope of this unit standard is the use of a Windows driven database customised and developed to meet the needs of a specific organisation or any other custom built insurance computer system.

    Identify and access the correct database 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Information received is identified and the correct database is selected to update the information. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. The database is accessed using a company specific security system/password. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Routine access problems are solved using familiar procedures. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Process and check numerical data on a database used in one's own organisation 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Documents are checked to ensure that they contain all necessary numerical data. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Irregularities that could occur are identified and resolved using established procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Numerical data is captured accurately and at a speed indicated in a service level agreement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. The captured data is cross-checked for accuracy.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Data captured on the system is saved in accordance with established procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Original documentation is collated and archived in accordance with established procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Problems resulting from inaccurate collation and/or storage are known and understood and the necessary steps are taken to ensure that all records are complete and stored in the correct place. 


    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation and Moderation:
  • Accreditation for this Unit Standard shall be from the Services Seta Education and Training Quality Assurer (SSETQA) through assessment by a registered Assessor. Assessment should be contextual and be conducted in the workplace as far as possible.
  • Assessors must be registered as an Assessor and Moderators must be registered as moderators with SSETQA.
  • SSETQA will co-ordinate all moderation activities in accordance with their policies and procedures. 

  • UNIT STANDARD ESSENTIAL EMBEDDED KNOWLEDGE 
    The learner can:
  • Apply basic computer skills to capture data.
  • Understand and use a database.
