PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Dressing and making the human remains presentable
  • Coffining human remains for disposition
  • Finishing coffins for presentation purposes 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • The following range statements are general to the qualification:
  • Orifices will include eyes, mouth, nose, ears, throat and anus
  • Health, hygiene, safety and cultural practices, measures and procedures must be adhered to before and during the handling of human remains, mortuary equipment and when in the mortuary area
  • Sealing the mouth and eyes will include any procedures that keeps the mouth and eyes closed permanently
  • Washing of human remains are conducted according to customs, religious beliefs and/or instructions
  • Protective clothing and equipment will include goggles, mask, protective gown, apron, gloves and water repellent boots

    1. Human remains are checked to ensure all cleaning and plugging procedures have been completed and for pace maker. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Human remains are dressed and personal effects are placed on them according to instructions and requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Face is shaved if applicable and according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Hair is brushed and combed and if applicable beard is brushed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Make-up applied to face if applicable and according to instructions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Problem areas on the human remains are reported to higher authority.

    Coffin human remains for disposition 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Human remains are placed in coffin and adjusted for presentation purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Human remains are secured to prevent movement. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Internal coffin trimming is positioned in accordance with established procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Coffin lid is positioned and secured.

    Finish coffins for presentation purposes

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Handles are fitted securely and in correct positions. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Name plates are prepared and attached to the coffin. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Desired ornamentation is placed on or fitted to coffins. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    3. Inspecting coffins for damage such as scratches, chips or dents.

  • A general understanding of techniques for applying make-up to human remains
  • A comprehensive understanding of methods and techniques for preparing human remains and a coffin for viewing including trimming
  • An in depth understanding of methods and techniques for preparing and cleaning of human remains for storage purposes as prescribed in that qualification
  • A broad understanding of cultural and religious beliefs pertaining to dress codes and placement of artefacts
