PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Co-ordinating the preparation of materials and equipment for the funeral site
  • Monitoring and checking the preparation of the funeral and grave site. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Range statements which are applicable to the unit standard titles, specific outcomes and assessment criteria are found beneath the applicable assessment criteria.

    The following range statements are general to the qualification:
  • Additional specialised materials and equipment will include cement mixer, cement, sand, stone, water, flower stands, national flag;
  • Accessories will include flower baskets, danger tape, tissues and funeral arch;
  • Receptacles include petal, soil, wine, oil and flower receptacles.

    1. Assembled materials and equipment are checked for correctness. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Materials and equipment will include lowering machine, belts, cranks, stands, drapes, rails, grave planks, grave mats, gazebos, tents, chairs, levelling boards, petal/soil receptacles, flower petals, flowers, drinking water, water jugs, glasses & shovels.

    2. Documentation is checked to ensure correctness and compliance with legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Authorisation of transport is requested and obtained. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Loading of materials and equipment is monitored. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Monitor and check the preparation of the funeral and grave site.
