PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 4 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:

Inspecting human remains to ensure compliance with set standards and instructions
Monitoring the preparation of human remains and coffining 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 3 or equivalent.

    1.Human remains are inspected to ensure compliance with instructions and standards and if applicable Pace Maker is removed.

    Standards include religious and cultural needs, legal requirements, health specifications, and ethical standards.

    2.Instructions for preparations and coffining are adhered to within agreed time frames.

    measures are put in place.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5.Coffin trim and finished product are inspected to ensure correctness of placement and fit. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coffin trimming includes all internal linings, pillows, shrouds, handles and ornaments, thumb screws, name plates, eschucion plates, corner clips.

    A comprehensive understanding of standards and instructions with regard to human remains.
    An all rounded understanding of circumstances for the removal of Pace Makers.
    An in depth understanding of health and hygiene practices and procedures for working with human remains.
    A general understanding of placement and fitment of coffin trimmings.
