PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard forms part of the Qualification, National Certificate in Funeral Services Practice and is registered at Level 3 on the National Qualifications Framework. Learners working towards this standard will be learning towards the full qualification, or will be involved in or working within a funeral services environment, specialising in Embalming, Marketing and Merchandising or Disaster Management, where the acquisition of competence against this standard will add value to each individual and the Funeral Industry as a whole.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Preparing for the funeral ceremony
  • Assisting at the funeral ceremony
  • Assisting with the internment of the human remains
  • Assisting with the delivery of the human remains 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Learners accessing this qualification will have demonstrated competency in:
  • Numeracy at NQF Level 2 or equivalent.
  • English, verbal and written communication at NQF Level 2 or equivalent. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE

    The following range statements are general to the qualification:
  • Ceremonies will include burials, cremations, memorial services, sea burials and vigils.
  • Hearse accessories will include stoppers, sticks and tapes

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    1. Hearse is ready and cleaned according to organisational regulations and requirements 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    2. Correct documentation is obtained and confirmed 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Documentation will include death certificates, permission to cremate, burial orders, Ministers letter, organist instructions, delivery instructions and grave site receipts
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. Location of coffined human remains is verified 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Correct coffins/human remains are identified and placed in hearse 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Funeral accessories are assembled and placed in hearse 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    6. Coffin and accessories are secured 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Coffins will include coffins, caskets or any other holding receptacle used for burial purposes

    7. Venue of funeral ceremony is identified and located

    1. Hearse arrives at funeral venue according to pre-determined time frame

    2. Placement of coffin and/or accessories is done according to instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    3. If applicable programmes/leaflets are distributed 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Mourners are directed into and out of the venue 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Coffin and/or accessories are placed in hearse 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accessories will include programmes/pamphlets/leaflets, church trolley, petal/soil/oil receptacles, floral tributes, wreaths, flag, umbrellas petals and oil

    6. Hearse is driven according to requirements of funeral and according to instructions

    Assist with the internment of the human remains

    1. Pall-bearers are assembled and briefed regarding procedures

    2. Coffined human remains is removed from hearse with the assistance of the pall bearers who will assist in placing coffined human remains onto lowering devise

    3. Coffined human remains are lowered into the grave as per instructions 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    4. Petal / soil receptacles are made available for mourners 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    5. Mourners are escorted to their vehicles
