PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This introductory unit standard in environmental ethics is relevant to a wide range of professions, in particular those concerned with the environment or those having a significant impact upon the environment. It introduces the learner to some basic environmental ethics concepts, and encourages application of this knowledge to familiar contexts within the candidate's personal and professional experience. This unit standard should help the learner to clarify and evaluate his/her own environmental values in relation to the field of work or study. It also introduces the learner to the contested and ambiguous nature of environmental values related to his/her field of work or study.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Demonstrate introductory knowledge and understanding of environmental ethics as it relates to practice
  • Apply introductory knowledge of environmental ethics to the analysis and resolution of a concrete environmental problem
  • Describe the environmental value positions that inform policies and practices affecting the environment
  • Apply introductory knowledge of environmental ethics to personal lifestyle choices and/or workplace practice

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    This introductory unit standard at Further Education and Training Certificate (FETC) level assumes no prior knowledge or experience of the field of environmental ethics. However, it does assume competence in the language of instruction, and knowledge of the candidate's particular field of work or study. The candidate should be in possession of at least a General Education and Training Certificate (GETC). 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard focuses on applying knowledge and understanding of basic concepts in environmental ethics (e.g. ethics, values, value positions, the environment, ecological sustainability) to familiar, practical contexts. At this level, knowledge of environmental ethics as a theoretical field is not required.

    Environmental problems selected for analysis should be concrete and related to the personal experience of the learner (e.g. a local or provincial issue) and to their field of work or study. At least two distinct environmental value positions should be evident in the environmental problems selected.

    Candidates should evaluate one or two key policies or practices related to their experience. These may be large- or small-scale (e.g. national legislation, local by-laws, organisational procedures).

    In addition to their work or study context, this unit standard also provides the learner with an opportunity to reflect on personal lifestyle choices in relation to environmental values.

    UNIT STANDARD ACCREDITATION AND MODERATION OPTIONS 
    Accreditation and moderation options:

    Anyone assessing a learner against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.

    Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this unit standard must be accredited as a provider through the relevant ETQA by SAQA.

    Moderation of assessment will be overseen by the relevant ETQA according to the moderation guidelines in the relevant qualification and the agreed ETQA procedures.
