PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This is a core unit standard in the National Diploma in Environmental Education, Training and Development Practice, NQF Level 5. In this qualification are a number of unit standards that require the learner to apply knowledge and demonstrate an understanding of environmental issues and sustainability. This unit standard provides learners with an opportunity to investigate a variety of environmental concepts relating to environmental management and sustainable living, so that they are able apply this knowledge in a range of contexts.
This unit standard provides learners with general knowledge about sustainability issues, and in-depth knowledge of a particular environmental issue or challenge. It requires them to use this knowledge to describe options for better environmental management and sustainable living within a variety of geographical, social and economic contexts. LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
Learners will either have obtained a level 4 qualification in Natural Sciences, Social Sciences or Environmental Sciences, or will have completed unit standard: Demonstrate a knowledge of environmental systems and sustainability.
In addition, this unit standard must be taken in conjunction with: Investigate options for improved environmental management and sustainable living. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
At level 5 the learner is required to understand a variety of terms and concepts relating to environmental management and sustainable living. Where appropriate, they should understand the origins of these terms and be aware of the contested nature of a number of environmental terms.
The learner should be able to use and apply these terms and concepts when discussing environmental issues and challenges, whether local, national and global in nature. Candidates are required to analyse one sustainability issue in depth, demonstrating that they understand the implications of terms and concepts related to sustainability. They are also required to apply this knowledge by recommending options for greater sustainability in a variety of contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar. |
