PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This unit standard is for people working as environmental education practitioners or environmental health and safety officers in contexts in which they are required to understand and address environmental issues or risks. They may work in various contexts including environmental education centres, community-based projects, non-governmental organisations, government departments or industry.
People credited with this unit standard will understand the scope and complexity of an environmental issue and be able to research and analyse it from social, political, economic and biophysical perspectives. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
The candidate will be required to demonstrate an FETC or RPL equivalent in order to gain access to the National Certificate in Environmental Education, Training and Development Practice (EETDP) (NQF Level 5) for which this is a core unit standard. Competence in language and communication at FETC level is essential.

UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
This level 5 unit standard requires the candidate to research and analyse an environmental issue in depth, understanding it from social, economic, political and biophysical points of view.
Candidates should undertake this unit standard at the same time as unit standard EE 5C.05: Network broadly in order to source information and support around a key environmental issue or risk. They should focus on the same issue in both unit standards so that their research and networking are complementary. As in the case of unit standard EE 5C.05, it is recommended that candidates work co-operatively in small research groups, each group researching and analysing a different issue. By the end of the programme of learning, each group should share the results of its research with the other groups so that the group as a whole develops a deeper understanding of a range of relevant environmental issues. |
