A person credited with this unit standard is able to:

  • Report on the results of the acid-base titrations.

    This unit standard is for anyone who has to perform elementary acid-base titrations in an analytical laboratory.

    This unit standard will contribute to the full development of the learner by providing recognition, further mobility and transportability within the field of manufacturing and assembly. The skills, knowledge and understanding demonstrated within this unit standard are essential for social and economic transformation and upliftment within the manufacturing and processing environment.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    The scope of this unit standard is for anyone who has to perform elementary acid-base titrations in an analytical laboratory.

    In the context of this unit standard, acid-base titrations refer to titrations used for the preparation of standard solutions.

    The level assigned to this unit standard is appropriate because the process is moderate in range, established and familiar and offers clear choices of routine responses. The learning demand employs basic operational knowledge and readily available information. The application of this unit standard is to qualify the person for certification in sub-trades.

    The purpose of the specific acid-base titration is explained according to standard chemical principles.

    Acidity and alkalinity is defined according to standard chemical principles.

    The principles of acid-base titrations are explained according to standard chemical principles. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    The explanation includes:
  • The identification and purpose of each of the chemical reagents used, including its concentration,
  • Identification of the equipment used,
  • Steps followed during the titration and the reasons for each step,
  • The end point of titration, with associated color changes,
  • Relevant calculations.
