PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
People who are pursuing a career in basic boat building require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard. Learners who achieve this unit standard will demonstrate a fundamental knowledge base of small craft manufacturing and contribute to the boat building sector to apply the fundamentals of design in small craft construction processes.
A person credited with this unit standard is able to: |
LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING |
It is assumed that learners are already competent in Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2. |
UNIT STANDARD RANGE |
The range covers the role and purpose of the boat building sector. It includes the practices, culture, quality standards, legal framework, main activities and expectations of clients in the boat building sector. The applied competencies in this unit standards are relevant to wood, metal and composite construction materials. |
Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 |
Describe and interpret the basic principles of design of small craft. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Tensile, compressive and sheer forces are described in relation to structural requirements of hulls, bulkheads and decks. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The rigidity in flat sheets and boxing is described in terms of stiffness and strength in the various construction materials. |

The principle of buoyancy and stability are explained and interpreted in relation to the various materials and small craft hull designs. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Buoyancy and stability includes but are not limited to displacement, weight, centre of gravity, water lines, flotation, ballast. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
The various ways in which aesthetics impact on design considerations are explained and discussed in terms of stations, symmetry, proportion and repetition. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 |
Interpret and apply drawings. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
Drawing concepts are discussed and explained in terms of depth, dimension and proportion. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
International Standards Organisation (ISO) and measurement systems are understood and applied in the interpretation of drawings to the specifications. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The different types of drawings are distinguished by identifying the projection system. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Projection system includes but is not limited to first angle, third angle, isometric, oblique, construction of geometrical shapes. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Scales are interpreted in terms of basic dimensions, areas and volumes to reflect the relative size of the product to be built. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Marine system symbols, dimensions, instructions, conventions and legends are interpreted in the utilisation of the drawing. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 |
The drawings are sequenced in accordance with the manufacturing processes to be utilised. |
SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 |
Produce a technical drawing. |
OUTCOME RANGE |
Including free hand and computer or instrument aided. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The brief or instruction is interpreted correctly by illustrating the details and dimensions within rough draft sketches. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The rough sketch is utilised to determine and select the scales, drawing equipment and material requirements for the drawing process. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
Technical drawings are produced relative to the required layout views in accordance with instructions. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE |
Layout views include but are not limited to first and third angle orthographic, isometric and oblique projections. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
