PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard is able to provide the type of assistance required for estimating on projects. They will also be able to identify the data required, to gather and collate this data and provide the required information in the correct format so that the project estimate can be developed.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the basic procedures for project estimating.
  • Assisting with the gathering and collating of data required for estimating.
  • Participating in the preparation of the basis of estimate document.
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of a historical estimating databank.

    Components of an estimate may include, but not be limited to direct cost, indirect cost, home office costs, other costs, allowances, contingency, exclusions and assumptions.

    The types and sources of data required will be governed by the type and level of accuracy required for the estimate.

    The client is received and consulted with in a professional and polite manner.

    The types of data required for the preparation of an estimate are identified and recorded in terms of organisational policy.

    The sources of estimating data are identified and recorded in terms of organisational policy.

    The required estimating data is gathered after authorisation from the sources identified, within the required timeframes.

    Estimating data is recorded in the required format and timeframe.

    All assumptions and exclusions relating to the estimating data are recorded in accordance with project or organisational policy.

    Take part in the preparation of the Basis of Estimate document. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    A Basis of Estimate document is intended to explain the methodology used to prepare the estimate, its accuracy and intended purpose, as well as all assumptions, exclusions, and qualifiers which were made in the process of calculating the estimate.

    Contribute to the development and maintenance of a historical estimating databank.

    A databank is any collection of relevant data which may be in any form including electronic database, hard copies, etc.

    The types of data required in the databank are identified in terms of organisational policy. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Estimating data is collated, indexed and stored in the databank in accordance with organisational policy, and within the required timeframes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The information being prepared for storage in the databank is checked for completeness and compliance according to organisational policy.

    Remedial action is taken as directed in accordance with organisational procedures.
