PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This Unit Standard is intended for learners who need to develop historical consciousness, a cornerstone of cultural dynamics as a foundation for intelligent interactions with the world. Exposure to historical thinking should lead to responsible citizenship. It will be useful for learners in Local, Regional and National government, financial services, travel and tourism, global governance and civil society and libraries as well as for cultural museum assistants, politicians, diplomatic service cultural attaches, and other industrial sectors.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining continuity and change in a selected historical context.
  • Investigating an example of continuity and change over time in a selected historical context.
  • Analysing possible cause and consequence in a selected historical context.
  • Applying an appropriate research methodology to explain continuity and change in a selected historical context.

    It is assumed that learners are competent in Communication at Level 3.

    The typical scope of this Unit Standard is continuity and change over time and space from an historical perspective.

  • Context includes time, space and place.
  • Historical contexts include, but are not limited to, events, sites, periods, place, town, city, time and place.

    The effect of personal perceptions on the individual's reconstruction of the past is explored with reference to the importance of dialogue and the dangers of presenting only one point of view.

    Investigate an example of continuity and change over time in a selected historical context.

    An example of continuity and change is used to anticipate trends in a specific economic sector or to create a scenario.

    Historical sources include, but are not limited to, documents, texts, and other printed sources, oral sources, artefacts buildings, machinery, items of technology, monuments, memorabilia and art works.

    Appropriate sources are analysed to verify information and explain continuity and change.
