PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who manage a controlled burning operation for a fire break, slash burning and burning under plantation trees. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Produce a planned report for a controlled burn.
  • Lead a team conducting a controlled burning operation. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3.

    Plan for a controlled burn. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Tracer belts are prepared in accordance with the local fire plan. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Methods - manual, mechanical or chemical.
  • Specifications - width, roads.
  • Environment - slope/erosion,water courses.
  • Inspect tracer belts prior to burning operation.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Information is presented in accordance with local requirements.

  • Fuel loads.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Relevant parties are informed of intention to burn in accordance with local regulations.

    Resource placement and deployment is explained and demonstrated in accordance with the fire plan.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The area being burnt is constantly monitored for hazardous situations and appropriate measures taken in accordance with Industry standards.

  • Rolling logs, old stumps, ant hills, old grasslands and cliffs.
  • Weather changes.
  • Topography changes as work progresses.

  • Anyone assessing a candidate against this unit standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA.
