PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
The person credited with this unit standard will understand and be able to manage the Health, Safety and Environmental Protection activities in a maintenance environment in an organisation. The learner will be able to assess and control hazards and risks to health and safety in a maintenance environment and ensure procedures are executed according to requirements through monitoring and training workplace employees.

This unit standard will contribute to the full development of a professional community of maintenance managers and will lead to the transformation and upliftment within the maintenance environment.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Explaining the requirements of Health, Safety and Environmental Protection in a maintenance environment.
  • Assisting with the development of health, safety and environmental protection policies and procedures.
  • Monitoring and controlling the implementation of health and safety measures and environmental protection procedures in a maintenance environment.
  • Training employees in Health, Safety and Environmental Protection procedures. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners accessing this unit standard are competent in:
  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 5 or its equivalent.

    Principles of safety management systems in a maintenance environment are described accurately according to organisational standard operating procedures.

    The implications of Environmental Legislation pertaining to a maintenance environment are explained with examples.

    Assist with the development of health, safety and environmental protection policies and procedures.

    Current policies and procedures are checked against requirements and legislation to identify gaps.

    Recommendations for improvement are made to authorised individuals using the appropriate communication protocols.

    The maintenance workforce are informed and questioned on the relevant process to be followed and adhered to. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The health and safety measures and environmental protection procedures are explained with examples and their application monitored as prescribed. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The monitoring process that ensures health and safety measures and environmental protection procedures are applied as prescribed is performed within the required timeframe.

    Train employees in Health, Safety and Environmental Protection procedures.

    Training procedures and techniques are described and comply with organisational training standards and procedures.

    Training is conducted within required timeframe and format.

    Employees are trained in first aid application and handling emergency situations in accordance with prescribed levels.
