This unit standard is for people who load and re-fuel aircraft for the suppression of wildfires.

People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Load fixed wing aircraft.
  • Refuel fixed wing aircraft. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 1.

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Load fixed wing aircraft used for wildfire suppression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The loading of fixed wing aircraft is performed in accordance with industry standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Signals; valves and pumps; foamants and retardants.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Safe work procedures are adhered to whilst loading fixed wing aircraft, in accordance with Industry standards. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Appropriate protective clothing.
  • Aircraft only approached when stationary.
  • Aircaft always approached from behind wing.
  • Remain in safety zone at all times.
  • Signals used to communicate between pilot and loading crew are in accordance with Industry standards.
  • Visual contact with the pilot is maintained and instructions carried out immediately throughout loading.
  • Loading site is kept clean at all times.
  • Safety signs are always obeyed.

    Re-fuel fixed wing aircraft used for aerial wildfire suppression. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fixed wing aircraft are refueled in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • Always carried out under instruction of pilot.
  • Drum and aircraft always bonded.
  • Correct fuel types always used.
  • Fire extinguishing equipment is ready for use before refueling.
  • Aircraft earthed.
     

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Refueling procedures are adhered to in accordance with standard operating procedure. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
  • No plastic funnels or buckets ever used.
  • Cleanliness.
  • Fuel caps secure.
  • Sealed drums only.
  • No naked flames.
  • Awareness of danger of fuel fumes.
