PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit is for people who debark trees using a hatchet and prepare bark bundles in a wattle operation. People credited with this unit are able to:
  • Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in debarking using a hatchet and preparing bark bundles.
  • Prepare for debarking and the preparation of bundles.
  • Debark trees and prepare bundles to meet specifications. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Basic safety in forestry operations, knowledge of axes/hatchets and Communication at ABET Level 3. 

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
  • Demonstration of competence is to take place "on-the-job" in a production situation.
  • The Guidelines referred are FESA's "Guidelines for Forest Engineering Practices in South Africa".
  • Legislation referred to in this unit is the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Act 85 of 1993).

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Demonstrate knowledge of factors influencing efficiencies in debarking using a hatchet and preparing bark bundles. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Implications of unplanned debarking, unplanned preparation of bundles and lack of controls during the operation are explained in terms of cost, safety, operational efficiency and physical environmental impacts. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The role of the debarker as part of a team is explained in terms of complying with safety standards and to optimise production. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Factors influencing debarking productivity are explained in terms of section 4.2.4 of the Guidelines. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Prepare for debarking and preparation of bark bundles.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Safety requirements applicable to the operation are explained.

    All personal protective equipment required, is check for functionality and used in terms of company policy and legal requirements. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Equipment is checked for suitability and serviceability, and corrective action is taken, if required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Operational requirements for the debarking operation and the preparation of bundles are explained. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Production target, slash management, debarking quality, bark quality, size of bark bundles, timber flow, environmental requirements.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    General work area is check for hazards and corrective action taken according to standard operating procedures.

    Debark trees and prepare bark bundles to meet specifications.

    Trees are debarked using effective techniques.

    Debarking and the preparation of bark bundles are performed to meet operational requirements.

    Slash management, debarking quality, bark quality, size of bundles, bundle quality, debarking complements other phases of the operation, work-rate meets pre-determined production target.

    Standard operating procedures and safe work practices are adhered to throughout the operation.
