PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for people who clear plantation waste by burning. People credited with this unit standard are able to:
  • Prepare for burning.
  • Burn waste.
  • Mop up. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    Communication, Mathematical Literacy and basic knowledge of silviculture in commercial forestry.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Prepare area to be burnt. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Danger areas and fuel loading areas are identified as per standard procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Environmental concerns such as soil sensitivity and danger of erosion are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Positions of fire breaks and cut off point are identified. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Equipment and resources needed to control burn are ensured to be ready and available. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Fire fighting equipment and machinery are checked for defects. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 6 
    Weather predictions are investigated in terms of potential short and long term effects.

    Personal protective equipment is worn according to company safety standards.

    Burn is commenced in an orderly and controllable fashion.

    Plants are adjusted according to changes in weather and wind.

    The burn carried out does not damage soil and leaves a humus layer.

    Area is made safe and all flaming matters is extinguished.

    Guards are left to monitor area until are is safe, guards to have two way radios and fire fighting equipment.

    All equipment is cleaned, repaired and stored correctly.
