This unit standard orientates commercial forestry labour to the key elements in commercial forestry so that they understand the work that they do and how it fits into the sector.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Purpose of commercial forestry is explained according to company / industry needs in respect of genetics plant quality, work methods and experimental plots. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The importance of research is described in terms of its influence, optimal resource utilisation and forest efficiency. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of Silviculture in commercial forestry. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of Silviculture is explained in terms of the Influence on product quality crop yield and cost. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Main Silviculture tasks of commercial forestry are described according to forest owner's description. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Soil preparation, planting, coppicing, weeding, pruning and thinning.

    Tools and equipment used in Silviculture are identified according to company policy.

    The importance of Silviculture is described in terms of its influence on optimal utilisation, sub fields and forest efficiency.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The purpose of harvesting is described in terms of the influence on the final product, cost of harvesting and optimal utilisation of resources. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Harvesting operations are described using standard practice. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Clearfelling and debranching, debarking, extraction, log scaling, cross cutting, log writing, log recording, stacking, loading, transport and road maintenance.

    Tools and equipment used in harvesting are identified according to company policy.

    The importance of harvesting is described in terms of its influence on optimal resource utilisation, sub-field and forest efficiency.

    Operations in fire protection are described in terms of preparation of tracer belts, burning of belts, training of fire fighters, fighting fires, standby duties, maintenance of fire fighting equipment, lookouts and communication.

    Tools and equipment used in fire protection are identified according to fire protection plan.

    The importance of fire protection is described in terms of the influence on other sub-fields.
