PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners to demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and skills to evaluate and use appropriate equipment and accessories for the socializing and conditioning of service dogs.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate equipment for the handling of service dogs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the reasons for and uses of training equipment as aids.
  • Evaluate equipment and training aids used during the socialization and conditioning process.

    LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
  • Communication NQF 4.
  • Caring for the welfare of a service dog NQF Level 3
  • Supervision of service dogs in a kennel environment NQF Level 4

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Dogs may include but are not limited to service dogs, donated dogs and puppies between 8 weeks and 18 months. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Evaluate equipment for the handling of service dogs. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment may refer to but is not limited to leash, muzzle, choke chain, puppy line and harness. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The different equipment used for dog handling is evaluated in terms of their various uses, purpose and applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The use of equipment is demonstrated in a controlled scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The quality of equipment is assessed and maintained in order to maximise safety of dog and handler. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Demonstrate knowledge of the reasons for and uses of training equipment as aids. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Equipment may refer to but is not limited to: attack suits, bite sleeves, scratch pants, scratch box, toys and helmets. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Types of training assistant equipment are assessed according to their various uses and applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for the use of training assistant equipment are evaluated in terms of their purpose in accepted training methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for the inspection and maintenance of the training assistant equipment are evaluated in order to maximise safety of the assistant and dog. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3 
    Evaluate training aids used during the socialization and conditioning process. 
    OUTCOME RANGE 
    Training aids may refer to but are not limited to: dog trailers, obstacle courses and obstacles in the natural environment e.g. water.

    Types of training environments are evaluated according to their various uses and applications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons for the use of conducive training environments is evaluated in terms of their purpose in accepted training methods. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for the inspection and maintenance of the socialising and conditioning equipment are evaluated in order to maximise safety of the assistant and dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The utilization of training environment is evaluated according to the intended purpose for socializing and conditioning. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Utilization may include but is not limited to the selection of the environment.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
