PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the field of Safety and Society who utilize a trained sheep dog in gathering animals for the investigation of crime.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Utilize a sheep dog in investigation of stock theft in a controlled scenario.
  • Gather and release sheep by making use of a sheep dog in a controlled scenario.
  • Assist in the investigation of stock theft crimes.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Although a sheep dog is normally used to gather sheep and goats, this trained sheep dog mentioned in this unit standard may also be used to gather any other animals for the purposes of investigation of crime.

    Utilize a sheep dog in the investigation of stock theft in a controlled scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Crime scenes are managed by taking control, and planning the use of a sheep dog. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A search is planned taking influencing factors into account. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Influencing factors may refer to but are not limited to: structured direction, area search and distance of search.
     

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Gather and release sheep by making use of a sheep dog in a controlled scenario.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Communication techniques are demonstrated in order to give commands to a sheep dog. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Communication techniques are limited to: verbal and non-verbal.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Sheep gathering techniques are applied in a controlled scenario. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Gathering techniques may include lifting, straight line, pen and race etc.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Markings on the sheep are identified in order to determine the ownership of the sheep. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Releasing techniques are demonstrated in order to release sheep back to field. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Methods of rewarding a sheep dog is demonstrated in a controlled scenario.

    Assist in the investigation of stock theft crimes.
