PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for learners in the field of Safety and Society who must demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge of genetics and environmental influences in the breeding process of service dogs.

A person credited with this unit standard will be able to:
  • Evaluate stud dogs and brood bitch to ensure suitability of dogs.
  • Maintain physical and mental well-being of broods.
  • Plan the breeding combination.
  • Describe the care of a pregnant bitch.
  • Care for the bitch during and after whelping.

    UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Wherever the term breeding is used it should be understood to mean the physical breeding practices and not genetic breeding programmes. 

    Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria: 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1 
    Evaluate stud dogs and brood bitch to ensure suitability of dogs. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The background is evaluated in order to determine suitability on its influences on future litters. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Background may refer to but is not limited to bloodlines and does not refer to the analysis of genetic background.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The behaviour of the dog is evaluated in order to establish the temperament of the dog for breeding purposes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The anatomy of the dog is evaluated to determine medical and physical attributes of future litters. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Collected data on the trainability of the dog is analysed to inform future decisions regarding mating. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Trainability may refer to the ability of the dog to be trained for specific applications.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The breed characteristics are evaluated according to accepted dog breed standards. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Maintain physical and mental well-being of brood. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The physical, external examination of bitch is demonstrated in a controlled scenario. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Finding based on the physical examination is interpreted and actions are taken. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for ensuring that a bitch is kept fit and socialized with are explained to contribute to the cycle of mating processes. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Environmental needs of bitch is analysed taking into account factors which contribute to a safe pregnancy.

    Plan the breeding combination. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The heat cycle of the bitch is determined for a successful mating. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The date of mating is calculated according accepted signs. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Accepted signs may include but is not limited to: blood spatters in kennel and swollen up vulva.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Studs are selected in order to compliment the brood bitch's characteristics. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The copulation process is assessed in order to determine whether a successful mating has taken place. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION NOTES 
    Successful mating also refers to the defining of a time limit. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    The recorded breeding process is analysed to determine the success of the process. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4 
    Describe the care of a pregnant bitch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The reasons why a prescribed veterinary program must be complied with are described in order to maximise healthy pregnancies. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The reasons why a prescribed nutritional program is complied with are described in order to maximise healthy pregnancies and health of bitch. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    A possible birth date of the litter is calculated according to the data collected during the mating. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 5 
    Care for the bitch during and after whelping. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The bitch is monitored during and after whelping for any abnormalities. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The bitch is exercised after whelping to enhance milk production as well as minimise frustration levels. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The reasons for a prescribed disinfecting program are explained to ensure the health of the bitch and the puppies.

  • An individual wishing to be assessed (including through RPL) against this Unit Standard may apply to an assessment agency, assessor or provider institution accredited by the relevant ETQA, or an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Anyone assessing a learner against this Unit Standard must be registered as an assessor with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Any institution offering learning that will enable achievement of this Unit Standard or assessing this Unit Standard must be accredited as a provider with the relevant ETQA or with an ETQA that has a Memorandum of Understanding with the relevant ETQA.
  • Moderation of assessment will be conducted by the relevant ETQA at its discretion.
