PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for a learner within the fabrication and welding fields. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to repair wheel spin-burns safely by means of welding processes and to a high degree of accuracy in accordance with required quality specifications and standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Identifying and selecting the correct rail-grinding machine.
  • Identifying, select and use of the correct equipment, tools and material.
  • Identifying the different rail profiles.
  • Operational testing of equipment.
  • Applying safe working procedures and instructions related to repair wheel spin burns.
  • Repairing rails in accordance with the prescribe procedures, instructions and specifications.
  • Performing none destructive test on rails.
  • Performing pre- and post heating procedures correctly.
  • Dealing with unforeseen circumstances during the shearing operation.

    Equipment, tools and consumables are obtained, verified, loaded and off-loaded in accordance with company and legislative safety policies, procedures and instructions.

    The correct fire equipment is obtained and checked according to company policies and procedures. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Personal protective equipment is identified, obtained and used correctly at all times as required.

    The necessary precautions are taken to prevent injury to personnel when working with Perway and welding equipment.

    Vehicle inspection is done in accordance with company procedures and instructions.

    Roll marks on rails are correctly identified and the applicable work procedure(s) are applied in accordance with Permanent way specifications.

    Wheel-spin burns are measured and logged accurately according to company specifications.
