PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for a learner within the fabrication and welding fields. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to able to repair rail bound frogs by means of welding, grinding and gouging processes safely and to a high degree of accuracy in accordance with required quality specifications and standards.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Obtaining the correct equipment, tools, consumables and personnel.
  • Loading and off loading equipment, tools and consumables.
  • Preparing rail bound frogs for welding.
  • Repairing rails in accordance with the prescribe procedures, instructions and specifications.
  • None destructive testing of rails.
  • Pre- and post heating on various rail types.
  • Interpreting of job instructions, procedures, and specifications. 

  • LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
    It is assumed that learners are already competent in:

    The following unit standards at NQF Level 3:

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    Performance may be carried out:

    This unit standard is inclusive of chrome manganese rails and mono block crossings.

    This unit standard is exclusive of rail-manufactured frogs.

    Plan and prepare machines, equipment and resources prior to the repairing of rail bound frogs.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment, tools, consumables and fire equipment are obtained, verified, loaded and off loaded in accordance with company and legislative safety policies, procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct personal protective equipment is identified, obtained and used at all times as required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Vehicle inspection is done in accordance with company procedures and specifications.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    The necessary precautions are taken to prevent injury to personnel when working with Perway and welding equipment in accordance with the Permanent way welding specifications. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan and prepare for the repairing of rail bound frogs.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Fire hazards are identified, limited or removed in accordance with company policies, procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    Applicable fire fighting equipment is safely and correctly placed and removed in the work area according to company policies, procedures and specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    On track protection is placed correctly and timeously in according to Permanent way welding specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Rail bound frogs are measured, location is logged and specific repair process is determined correctly. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 
    Frogs are cleaned and checked for cracks by means of non-destructive tests according to company procedures and specifications.

    Preparatory work is done in accordance with company procedures and specifications.

    Preheating process is performed correctly and safely according to specifications.
