PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
This unit standard is for a learner within the fabrication and welding fields. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to repair 14% cast manganese frogs safely and to a high degree of accuracy in accordance with required quality specifications and standards by means of welding, grinding and gouging processes.

The qualifying learner is capable of:
  • Obtaining the correct equipment, tools, consumables and human resources.
  • Testing the operation of equipment.
  • Applying safe working procedures and instructions related to 14% cast manganese frog.
  • Executing non-destructive test on rails.
  • Repairing frog in accordance with the Permanent way welding specifications.
  • Dealing with unforeseen circumstances.
  • Removing equipment from rail in accordance with company and manufacturer's instructions.

    Plan and prepare machines, equipment and resources prior to the repairing of 14% cast manganese frogs.

  • ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    Equipment, tools, consumables and correct fire-fighting equipment are obtained, verified, loaded and off-loaded in accordance with Permanent way welding specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The correct personal protective equipment is identified, obtained and used at all times as required. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    The necessary precautions are taken to prevent injuries of personnel when working with Perway and welding equipment according to Permanent way specifications. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    Vehicle inspection is done in accordance with company procedures and specifications.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Plan and prepare for the repairing of 14% cast manganese frogs in accordance with permanent way specifications.

    Fire hazards are identified, limited or removed according to standard practice.
