PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD
Learners who are entering the filed of general draughting require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.

Qualifying learners can apply the correct codes and standards to draughting. This will include understanding the different types of engineering drawings, the standard welding and machining symbols.

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 2.
  • Computer Literacy.

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE
The ranges, as indicated under the specific outcomes, determine the scope and level of this unit standard:
  • The learner should be able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Work is generally, but not exclusively, carried out in a team environment.
  • Applicable draughting procedures are followed and understood.
  • Characteristics of the different materials are included.
  • Different cutting machines and basic welding techniques are included.
  • Drawings include mechanical and building.

  • Specific Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 1
Identify and describe the different types of engineering drawings.
    OUTCOME RANGE
    Multiview, pictorial and schematic drawings.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Orthographic projection is identified and described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Oblique, isometric and perspective drawings are identified and described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The appropriate diagrams and symbols are identified and described.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2
Identify and describe the standard welding and machining symbols as per relevant code of practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Machining processes required for specific surface finishing is described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Welding and supplementary symbols are identified and described.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
The code of practice for draughting is being explained.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 3
Apply the draughting standards to an engineering drawing.
    OUTCOME RANGE
Engineering drawings include Multiview, pictorial and schematic.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
The draughting standards are identified and applied according to the code of practice.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2
Applicable company policies and procedures are identified and applied in the drawing process.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3
Drawings are produced which conform to specifications.

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 4
Work safely with due care for self, fellow workers, and equipment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1
Safety, health, environmental and quality procedures are applied at all times.

PROVIDERS CURRENTLY ACCREDITED TO OFFER THIS UNIT STANDARD:
This information shows the current accreditations (i.e. those not past their accreditation end dates), and is the most complete record available to SAQA as of today. Some Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionaries have a lag in their recording systems for provider accreditation, in turn leading to a lag in notifying SAQA of all the providers that they have accredited to offer qualifications and unit standards, as well as any extensions to accreditation end dates. The relevant Primary or Delegated Quality Assurance Functionary should be notified if a record appears to be missing from here.
