PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD 
Learners who are entering the field of 3D computer aided design require the skills, values and knowledge reflected in this unit standard.
The unit standard covers the basic commands needed to draw simple 3D models. Learners who have completed this unit standard will be able to set up a 3D model and paper space area and draw a basic 3D model. 

LEARNING ASSUMED TO BE IN PLACE AND RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING 
It is assumed that learners are competent in:
  • Communication, Mathematical Literacy and Computer Literacy at NQF Level 3.
  • The unit standards:
  • "Set up a drawing sheet and draw a basic 2D drawing" at NQF Level 2.
  • "Annotate, dimension and cross-hatch drawings" at NQF Level 2.
  • "Name define and create groups, blocks, symbols, externally referenced objects, model space and paper space" at NQF Level 2. 

  • UNIT STANDARD RANGE 
    This unit standard focuses on the principles of 3D designs and on the use of the correct commands, tools and features to perform the required tasks.

    Prepare and set up a 3D design environment.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The settings are formatted for displaying of solids. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Solid filled display and form-building edges display.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    The ACIS settings are formatted for degenerative faceting and faceter mode. 

    SPECIFIC OUTCOME 2 
    Display a 3D model in either solid or surface format by changing the definition settings.

    The difference is indicated between a solid and a surface.

    A model is presented using settings and appropriate values.

    ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 
    The Cartesian and polar coordinate system are applied when starting a design. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    Relative and absolute Cartesian, fixed relative origin system, world and user coordinate system.
     

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 
    A user defined X-Y-Z plane is drawn upon. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 
    Fixed relative origin is described during the design. 

    ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 
    A work plane is displayed in model space. 
    ASSESSMENT CRITERION RANGE 
    This also includes definition of work plane, UCS by facet, 3 points and by world (plan) view.

    The origin of an existing work plane or UCS is relocated.

    A 3D object is designed, viewed and displayed in the appropriate view according to set requirements.

    A 2D closed profiles are extruded to a height or depth to produce a 3D surface or solid model.

    A 2D/3D polyline is drawn in the design process.

    A 2D Boolean features are used to create closed profiles.
