PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD |
This Unit Standard is intended for learners with mechanical, structural, electrical and cosmetic knowledge who apply technical knowledge to assess the damage in a light motor vehicle claim. It will be useful for claims assessors who work on light motor vehicle claims providing they have the required technical knowledge of light motor vehicles.

Identify the damage to a light motor vehicle. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 1 |
The vehicle is identified in terms of make, model, year of manufacture and vehicle identification number (VIN) and an indication is given of any accessories. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 2 |
The pre collision road worthiness of the vehicle is assessed in terms of the relevant Road Ordinance. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 3 |
The general condition and appearance of the vehicle is assessed in order to value the vehicle. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 4 |
Damage to the vehicle is qualified in terms of claimed related damage. |
ASSESSMENT CRITERION 5 |
Alternative terminology used synonymously for different components and procedures is known and used interchangeably with reference to different manufacturers. |

Damaged components in a light motor vehicle are identified on the vehicle and an indication is given of the function of each part and its relationship to other parts on the vehicle. |

The relationship between equipment used to affect a repair, the time needed and the cost of the repair is explained and the ability of a workshop to affect a repair is assessed for a light motor vehicle. |

The labour required to repair the damage is estimated for each specific component. |

The cost price is obtained from different suppliers for new, alternative and used spares for each specific part, and the consequences of using new, alternative or used parts is explained for three case studies. |

Photographs of three vehicles and damaged components are produced by the learner as evidence in support of a decision. |
